Maha Shivaratri is a significant Hindu festival observed in honour of Lord Shiva. On this day devotees of Lord Shiva, observe a day-long fast, remain awake all night and perform puja during and chant mantras to celebrate the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivratri. Devotees believed that Lord Shiva fulfils everyone’s wishes on this day and bring happiness and prosperity to the lives of his devotees.
Shivratri in the month of Phalguna (as per North Indian calendar) is observed as Maha Shivratri. However, as per the South Indian calendar, this auspicious festival is celebrated in the month of Magha on Chaturdashi Tithi during Krishna Paksha.
- Festive Attires :
Wake up early, take a bath and wear clean and washed clothes for puja. Chant OM Namah Shivaya as many times as possible. It is advisable not to wear black for Mahashivaratri poojas. Hence, if you are fasting or going to the Shiva temple, choose colours such as red, pink and yellow.
