Pocharam Project, the first project of Telangana by Hyderabad Nizam built 100 years ago has reached Full Reservoir Level (FRL) due to good inflows. Hyderabad Nizam laid foundation stone for Pocharam Project in 1917 at Pocharam village of Nagireddipet mandal on Manchippa brook in united Nizamabad district which is now Kamareddy district.

With 2.423 tmc capacity it was built at a cost of Rs 27.11 lakh and the construction was completed in 1922 to serve water needs of Nagieddipet and Yellareddy mandals in Kamareddy district and Medak mandal in Medak district.Pocharam has been serving irrigation and drinking water needs of Nizamabad and Medak district people from last 95 years. Nizam government constructed the project with limestone, lenght of the project is 1.7 km and it has 21 ft high bund across Manchippa brook, 58 km long canals dug around it and it has 73 distributaries.

Farmers’ have been cultivating 10,500 acres under this project, earlier project was constructed with 2.423 tmc capacity, but due to silt the project water storage capacity decreased to 1.82 tmc.The project distributaries are divided in to A and B zones, A zone comprising 1 to 48 distributaries and B zone comprising 49 to 73 distributaries. In Kharif season water is used from both A and B zones, in Rabi season only one zone is used and every year the zone is changed.

Project Total Water Capacity is 1.82 tmc and Full Reservoir Level (FRL) is 14.64 ft, now the project reached has reached FRL level. Project officials released 277 cusecs to project canals and another 262 tmc into Manchppa Brook. Pocharam Project attracts the tourists from Telangana, Maharashtra and Karnataka, every year thousands of tourists visit Pocharam Project and Sanctuary from Hyderabad, Nizamabad, Kamareddy, Nanded, Gulbarga districts. Pocharam Sanctuary has various types of birds and animals. Nizam government constructed a guest house near Pocharam project.

How to Reach:

By Air

At present, there is no functional airport in Kamareddy . The closest airport is the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, at a distance of 168km.

By Train

You can reach Kamareddy from Secundrabad(SC) or Kacheguda(KCG) by travelling in a train. Secundrabad to Kamareddy train takes approximately 2 hours 15 minutes.

By Road

Pocharam Dam is located at a distance of nearly 36kms from Kamareddy town, 90 Kms from Nizamabad Town and 110 Kms from Hyderabad and is accessible by road.
